Nutanix vs Proxmox: choosing your next platform
Already leaving VMware? Nutanix AHV and Proxmox VE can both run your virtual machines. The harder choice is who will design, support and operate the platform after migration.
The short answer
Shortlist Nutanix when you want an integrated commercial platform and a clearly contracted support path, especially when a hardware refresh is already planned. Shortlist Proxmox when you want control over the stack and have the skills, or a managed partner, to own storage, networking and recovery. Both need a tested migration and backup plan.

Compare the whole operating budget
AHV being included does not make the Nutanix platform free. Request an itemized NCI quote with support, supported hardware, storage and additional products. Do not compare that with only a Proxmox subscription.

Vendor support operates Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 17:00 CET/CEST on Austrian business days. A response target is not a restoration guarantee. Three dual-socket hosts on Standard cost EUR 3,300 annually before VAT. Add hardware, backups, migration, monitoring and labor before comparing proposals.
Prove recovery before choosing
Ask each proposal to survive the same failures: a lost host, storage failure, network interruption and site outage. Identify what stays running and what needs a restore. Cluster availability is not disaster recovery.
Choose the Proxmox storage architecture before sizing hosts. Ceph introduces storage-network and capacity-planning work. Reusing an external array changes that design. For Nutanix, verify supported configurations and usable capacity after resilience requirements. For either platform, confirm your backup product supports the exact versions and demonstrate a restore.
Plan the VMware exit
- Inventory applications, guests, appliances, backup integrations and VMware-specific dependencies.
- Check the current Nutanix Move or Proxmox import compatibility requirements.
- Pilot ordinary and difficult workloads. Measure downtime, performance and recovery.
- Define rollback and the point at which the old application stops accepting writes.
- Budget the overlap in licensing, hardware and staff. Retire VMware after acceptance tests pass.
Both choices require retraining. Ask staff or partners to demonstrate a host failure, restore and upgrade on the proposed design. Confirm who covers critical incidents, holidays and departures. Do not infer those skills from VMware experience alone.
